County high schools jockey for district playoff seeds

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – As many as four Clinton County baseball and softball teams may qualify for the postseason when district playoffs begin several weeks from now.

Most recent rankings, through this past weekend, show that the Bucktail softball team and Central Mountain baseball and softball teams are all but guaranteed playoff berths when the postseason begins sometime after mid-May. All three are currently ranked number one in their respective divisions, Bucktail in Class 1A in District 4 softball and Central Mountain in District 6 Class 5A in baseball and softball respectively.

The prospective newcomer is the Sugar Valley Phoenix baseball team. The Phoenix, ranked number five among eight teams in the District 4 A baseball standings, is hoping to make the postseason for the first time in the school’s just over quarter-century history.

To make the playoffs, per District 4 rules, the team will have to finish at no worse than a .500 record. Through last weekend, Sugar Valley was at 5-6 with nine games remaining before the May 13 cutoff date. Future contests include rematches with three teams the Phoenix has already defeated.

Both Central Mountain ball teams are defending district champions. Bucktail softball was a district runner-up a year ago,
