Sanchez Scores Lone Goal for Wildcats
MILL HALL, PA — In a hard-fought battle on home turf, the Central Mountain Wildcats boys soccer team played powerhouse State College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Both goals came during an action-packed first half, with the Wildcats holding strong through the final whistle to secure an impressive result against a tough opponent.
With the tie, Central Mountain’s overall record moves to 5-5-2 on the season, while State College stands at 9-3-3.
Central Mountain’s lone tally came courtesy of an opportunistic play by Yayfran Sanchez. Spotting an opening as State College tried to reset play through their backline, Sanchez sprinted in, slid to strip the ball away from the opposing goalkeeper, and quickly turned to bury the shot into the net.
Wildcat goalkeeper Cooper Confer provided a standout performance between the pipes, limiting State College to just a single goal while turning away multiple high-caliber chances with critical saves to keep Central Mountain on level terms.
Central Mountain head coach Billy Hook praised his squad’s tenacity and energy following the contest.
“The result is a very good one. Today is a day where a tie is a good result for sure,” Coach Hook said. “They’re a very good program, they played like it. I was really happy with the way we stepped up and battled in every situation, created some chances, and again, good result.”
Hook singled out Confer’s effort in goal as well as the defensive unit, which saw key adjustments to slow down State College’s attack.
“Cooper continues to do a fantastic job,” Hook noted. “And then defensively, I’m very happy with the guys we had back there. Just outside backs doing what they need to do. Alton Counsil had to play a lot of center back today. It’s something we’ve been doing a little bit of each game, but today was—we just felt like we needed him there. Cam Raymond did very good. So all along that whole back line, we were good.”
Highlighting Sanchez’s game-changing opening goal, Hook explained that pressuring the opposing keeper was part of the strategy coming into the match.
“They’ll play that way with using their keeper in possession. We don’t do that very much, but some of these really good teams will do that,” Hook said. “It’s something that we tell our guys, is to let’s try and take advantage of that, catch them sleeping. Yifran and Gabe both have like unbelievable speed, so they can just create something for us with that energy. And not only was it an energy booster, but he also got the goal, which was obviously much needed.”
With the draw behind them, the Wildcats turn their attention to a busy slate ahead. Central Mountain returns to the field on Monday for Senior Night against Selinsgrove.
“Focusing on Senior Night. It’s to be—always an emotional game. So we need to come out with a win for sure,” Hook emphasized.
Monday’s schedule kicks off with the JV match at 5:30 p.m., followed by Senior Night ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. to honor the team’s nine seniors. Varsity kickoff against Selinsgrove is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Varsity game will be livestreamed on ClintonCountySports.com.
